Super quick Barmouth trip.
Sandy Lolly pop.. it has happened to us all !
that moment wandering across the beach dropping our
candy floss or ice cream and then its covered in Sand....
Bucket of stuff, when I was little I always collected a bucket of shells,
which always disappered one route, some ended up in my Nans garage a few made it home.
I enjoyed beach combing again :-)
A super speedy trip to Barmouth for a few final bits and pieces, I am lucky to be
able to pop in the car and go, we took my partners Son and girlfriend who havent been for
a few years.
It was Bank Holiday Saturday and the place was pretty much empty, its wasnt a bad day, a bit breezy but bright, so where was everyone? Barmouth is a beautiful beach, clean with golden
sand, it should of had people on it !

Men on the beach
I was so happy when my chap said we could go to Crosby on the way to Blackpool, ok its a 30 mile diversion but it was worth it. I have wanted to go for ages but its quite a trek, I was not disappointed, when we pulled on to the carpark, chap says " what are all those people doing on the beach? " I looked back and said "that is what we have come to see" He had only ever seen a picture of one of men at a time so presumed it was just a man standing looking out not 100 ! I walked at a faster pace than usual in antipication of meeting the first of them, Im not very tall and number 21 was my hieght I greated him with a smile and stroked his face,as if he was a long lost friend, the weather has taken its toll but the corosion felt smooth and the colours bright even on a dull day, the rust and the green pocked marked face, stared back and then through me to the horizon. I took my usual photos and got my chap to take mine looking out to sea with my new found friend. We walked along and greeted some of the others and spoke to a local chap who said that they looked fantastic at sunset and that was a popular time for photographers to venture out to them.
After a picnic in the car we headed off to Blackpool, I hope to see the beach men again, it was a very uplifting experience, and for someone who looks out to sea alot I no longer felt alone in that act.

The changing face of the seaside.
Website about Rhyl
The changing face of the seaside is not always a nice one, once a bustling town is partially demolished at the bottom end of the beach hopefully to make way for a new out of town shopping center and cafes, I hope this comes through, the town is so sad, so many people are unemployed and each time you go the another shop has closed.

Roundabouts
The wood worker uses the tree to carve the horse, when the horse is no longer needed, it is shredded to make paper, the artist uses the paper to recreate the horse.
How to mount a horse's head
Today is making the mount day, new jigsaw to play with and sand paper. So far it is all going well :)

Amazing horse art
Beautiful horses made from driftwood
These are fantastic, might be worth a visit to her garden to see how she works, I have ideas of my own for garden sculpture, but always like more inspiration.

Henry Moore
I know from going to a talk by Bob and Roberta Smith that Henry Moore was an artist at the same time as Epstien, they werent friends. I like Epstiens work and some of Henry Moores' but something I read the other day really made me like his work a little more,
" one persistand and very English theme in Moore work is landscape imagery, planes and hollows of the body can be found in the landscape a paralle between flesh and skin and the earth and vegitation that covers the rocks"
What a lovely comparision.

Gypsies thoughts
I was having a think, while doing this project the gypsies do come up in conversations and as part of the work is about the end of the british holidays, the decline in fairgrounds, and even though I do not like arcades and the brashness of the fairground it is a shame that this is part of british history that is disappearing.
Since the program Big Fat Gypsy Wedding the families are in the spot light and I wonder if this has helped us understand thier ways or if it has just tapped the wedge in a little deeper. In my pre children days (BC Before Children) I used to love moving around, I lived in many towns and worked in pubs and resturants I enjoyed meeting new people and exploring new places, maybe this was down to part of my heritage, my mother has traveller blood in her fathers side of the family, they were showmen travelling around with fairgrounds to all the fairs, my daughter has done part of the family tree, children were registared all over the country.
When I was little ( under two) we lived in a caravan while waiting to move into the house my parents still live in, it over looked the canal at Fradley and I loved to watch the barges and wave to all the people as they went by, I wanted a boat and wanted to be nomadic.
Reading comments about the program is really quite upsetting, I dont think people really understand that the gypies are a different culture, and have been isolated and not just by choice but by preducdice aswell. So they now have opened their doors to the world, to some serious negativity. The girls are slagged off for the way they dress, even though they are virgins when they are get married and how many people can say that they were, they arent allowed to be alone with their boyfriends they are all shaparoned, so they shouldnt be judged by the length of the skirts.

Horse head pics
At last a couple of pics of the horsehead, one pre paint in at the foil stage and the other is when I hung it from the a apple tree while I sprayed it, so it looked like a pinata, or dead horse head hanging..... depending on how your mind works... wonder what the neighbours thought ;-)
I used matt black then a layer of glitter spray, it resembles a hammered metal sculpture now, and Im looking forward to seeing it when its mounted and hanging on the wall.

Horsehead almost complete
After a week of faffing and painting, repainting cursing and general procastinating the horse head is now painted in its final colour of choice..... black with glitter.... and I think it looks pretty fab, I need to mount it and bring together the work I have done and decide on how its going to come together for assesment and how to present the videos on youtube, I have done a few and will have to decide which ones work best for me and how to edit them.
Looking back over this term I have learnt alot more than I thought I have done all my own filming and editing on a software suite I havent used before and the music software is new to me too, I dont make music but I like to play with sounds.
I have made a fab horse head and am going to make the finishing touches to the carousel, even though it was just used for filming it would be nice to give it roof of sorts. This side of the project has worked well and I hope its assessed well, I am still trying to be more experimental but it feels uncomfortable and I like to be in a comfort zone, but the playing with ideas is fun its just the putting them together that the hard bit.

Mark Gertler
Merry go Round
1916.
Well Easter is over.
Easter is over and back to uni for a final count down before the end of term, another assessment is imminent so to look back over what I have done and how I am getting to an end point, I am really pleased with the horse head so far and hope to tweak it a little more this week a final coat of paint to make it look more carousel like and put it on a wooden mount. I have also decided that the thing I really don't like about carousel horse is the eyes, they are manic! I may do some work with these, I spy with my little eye.....
We had a quick trip to Barmouth yesterday but could not take photos at the fair as it was closed.......

Horsehead....
The original idea, a carousel horse head mounted like a deer after the hunt for example.
Chicken wire and bubble wrap... fab combination for a starting point.
and silver foil.......
taking shape nicely, and have done a test with some gold paint for a touch of colour.

Horses in art.
Horses are in abundant in art, war images from the Boar War and WW1, farming images, racing, hunting and much more. The horse has been asocaited with man for thousands of years, its a bond quite similar to the one with a dog. It has supported us through many years of evolution, as transport and working in agriculture.

Off to the fairground.
Off to the fairground tonight for more filming, Im still not liking all of the work I have done some is coming together better than other, but I do expect that, tonight I want images of fairground rides all lit up and the sound of people and machinary, the carousels and walzters and the smell of cheap burgers and candy floss. Im not going on the rides just to observe and to observe the people who go and run these fairs.
On my Mothers side of the family there is a branch of Showmen, Bobby Kemp and his sons ran rides at the fairgrounds and my daughter has looked in to the family tree quite alot and they really did move around alot, I wonder if this is where I got my ichy feet from in my younger days, my settalling wasnt through choice but necessity, having children grounded me, it would nt of grounded the travelllers whos lifestyle relied on them moving, but I knew I wanted my children to go through school and be more educated than I was, and I do feel this has been achieved. But now Im getting ready to move on again, but more of that another day. Tonight is going to the fair night, I will be unsetalled and probably needing a large brandy by the end of it, but I do think its the best thing to progress my work at the moment.

One of the edits.
pretty lights
Part of making these films has been about how I am effected by lights and sounds, I feel quite travel sick after the abuse of an arcade, the flashing lights and disorientating sounds make me giddy and nauseous, I hope to recreate this in my filming.

Filming images.
A few images from the filming I am doing at the moment, I am wanting a kalidascope effect overlay with lights and hopefully the horses, I have several different versions going on youtube at the moment, link to follow :-)

Why do I feel like this?
I have suffered from travel sickness in different guises for years:
But why me? after having a quick browse online it is the inner ear that seems to be the cause, I had lots of ear infections when I was a child, I also found this was caused by going to bed with damp hair ! it is a warm wet enviroment and a breeding ground for germs. So my inner ear could of been damaged. I dont remember being sick when I was little but we did travel alot at nights, on long journeys to Cornwall for example, and was always playing up in the back of the car with my brother and sister so not really paying attention to the world around.Nowadays the daftest of childrens rides can bring on a feeling of dizziness and nausea, aswell as mirrorballs.... everytime my partner and I went to Home Bargains, it was " Babe can we have a Mirror Ball ?" After a few weeks he gave in and we set it up in the flat; the sparkles and shine all around the room where wonderful as I sat on the sofa, until I started to feel dizzy, and my eyes started to roll, the mirror ball hasnt been on much since then..... so I got a disco ball !
What is motion sickness?(according to the net)
Motion sickness is a very common disturbance of the inner ear that is caused by repeated motion such as from the swell of the sea, the movement of a car, the motion of a plane in turbulent air, etc. In the inner ear (which is also called the labyrinth), motion sickness affects the sense of balance and equilibrium and, hence, the sense of spatial orientation.

And now for something completely different
This next project is going to be about what I don't like about the seaside, the lights and sounds which over stimulate the brain, sending me to nausea and back, my ideal Seaside has nothing apart from a beach, crashing waves and a decent fish and chip shop for lunch. Places such as Blackpool horrify me, the loud music, flashing lights and hen party giggles make me feel like running home and diving under the duvet.
With this project I hope to recreate some of the visual pain and sound pollution that I feel, I know a lot of people enjoy funfairs and circus's but for me its a nauseating experience, the feeling of being travel sick, mi grainy and epileptic ( which I'm not ) all in one place, maybe it will appeal to both people who love and hate the disorientation.
I am also doing images that are quite graphic design based using paint pro and photoshop, a bit of mixed media, video work and sound pieces, in all I hope to present a selection of work that will be enjoyed by a range of people.
